Port summary
Nouméa is one of the easiest South Pacific ports to do on your own. The cruise berth is right in town at the Gare Maritime on Quai Jules Ferry. From the terminal, Place des Cocotiers, the City Museum, the blue-roofed Port Moselle market and the Latin Quarter shops are all within a 5–15 minute walk. Larger ships, and second ships on busy days, berth at the commercial wharves about 1 km north. You can't walk out through the working port, but free shuttle buses run to the Gare Maritime. The classic port day is the beach. Baie des Citrons and Anse Vata are 4–6 km south of the centre. The Lyvaï hop-on hop-off bus leaves from the terminal on cruise days (about 1,060 F for the day) and stops at the market, both beaches and the Aquarium des Lagons. Tanéo city bus L3 also runs to the beaches. Taxis don't queue at the terminal: phone the central taxi number or pick one up at the Place des Cocotiers rank. From Anse Vata, taxi boats cross to Duck Island (Île aux Canards) in five minutes for snorkelling on a marked underwater trail. The Tjibaou Cultural Centre, Renzo Piano's showcase of Kanak culture, is a 15–20 minute taxi ride east and is closed on Mondays. A full day at Amédée Island and its lighthouse needs booking ahead and a boat that returns well before all-aboard. Plan around French hours: many shops close from about 11:30am to 2pm and on Sunday afternoons. The market, Tjibaou Centre and zoo are all closed on Mondays. The Musée de Nouvelle-Calédonie is closed for renovation. Prices are high and in CFP francs (XPF).

Mary D's own public day trip returns to Nouméa at 16:30–17:00, too late for most all-aboard times, so book a cruise-timed boat instead: Noumea Turtle Tours runs an Amédée catamaran trip from its stand at the Gare Maritime cruise terminal, 09:30–15:30, for 12,500 F (~€105) and asks you to request a quote with your ship and date. Check in 20 minutes before departure; on the island the lighthouse (when open) costs about 300 F (~€3) and there is a bar and restaurant for food and drinks. If your ship berths at the commercial wharves, take the free shuttle to the Gare Maritime first.

The Lyvaï hop-on hop-off bus leaves from the Gare Maritime on cruise days every 20–25 minutes (1,060 F / ~€9 for the day) and stops at the market, Baie des Citrons, Anse Vata and the aquarium. From Anse Vata, walk up the signed Ouen Toro discovery trail (about 30–35 minutes) to the lookout and WWII guns, come back down for lunch on the Anse Vata seafront, then visit the Aquarium des Lagons (1,600 F / ~€13), which only opens at 1pm on weekdays. Notre-Dame du Pacifique is not on the bus route; skip it or add a taxi.
