The Tjibaou Cultural Centre is New Caledonia's showcase of Kanak culture and one of the Pacific's great modern buildings. Designed by Renzo Piano and opened in 1998, it is named after the Kanak independence leader Jean-Marie Tjibaou. Its ten tall timber 'cases', shaped like unfinished traditional huts, rise out of the trees on the Tina Peninsula. Inside are galleries of contemporary and traditional Kanak and Pacific art, plus an exhibition on Tjibaou himself. Outside, the Kanak Path winds through gardens of plants used in daily life and ritual, past traditional houses on the shore. Allow two hours, take a taxi (15–20 minutes from the Gare Maritime) and remember that the centre is closed on Mondays.
