Port summary

There is no harbour on Pitcairn. Ships anchor or hold position off Bounty Bay on the north-east coast, and passengers go ashore in the islanders' aluminium longboats (or the ship's own tenders or Zodiacs) to the small jetty at The Landing. The captain decides on the day: the Pacific swell here is often too big, and larger ships in particular regularly land nobody. When that happens, dozens of islanders come out to the ship and set up a craft market and talks on board. If you do get ashore, you get around on foot or on the back of a quad bike. The Hill of Difficulty road climbs from The Landing to Adamstown, the only settlement, in about 15–20 minutes of steep walking; islanders offer quad rides if you'd rather not. The village square holds the HMS Bounty anchor, the Seventh-day Adventist church with the Bounty Bible, the post office and the museum. With 3–5 hours ashore you can combine the village with one walk: Christian's Cave on the cliff above Adamstown, St Paul's Pool on the east coast for a swim, or a quad ride up to the Highest Point for views over the whole island. Trails are red dirt and turn slippery after rain, so wear proper shoes. Bring cash. There are no ATMs and cards are close to useless on a cruise day; islanders take NZ dollars and US dollars. Pitcairn keeps the Sabbath on Saturday, so expect a quieter island if your ship calls then.
