Port summary
Puerto Chacabuco is the deep-water port of the Aysén region, at the head of the Aysén Fjord about 15 km from the town of Puerto Aysén. It's a working port with fish farms in the bay and a village of about 1,200 people, so there's little to see right at the landing. Most cruise ships anchor in the bay and tender passengers to the Empresa Portuaria Chacabuco (Emporcha) pier, where a port building has seating, toilets and WiFi; smaller ships may berth alongside. A short walk along the shore takes you to the rusting hull of the Viña del Mar, a passenger ship that ran aground in a storm in 1963. The best of the day lies inland along Route 240: the suspension bridge and riverside of Puerto Aysén (20 minutes), the private Aikén del Sur park on Lake Riesco (15 minutes), the roadside waterfalls of the Río Simpson National Reserve (about 50 minutes) and Coyhaique, the lively regional capital with a pentagonal plaza, craft market and regional museum (about 80 minutes each way). Van tours and taxis wait outside the port gate, and minibuses run from the village to Puerto Aysén. Expect rain at any time of year, carry Chilean pesos and allow plenty of time for the drive back.
