The Petrohué River drains Lake Todos los Santos through a gorge of hard volcanic basalt, and at the Saltos it squeezes through channels and chutes in a torrent of glacial turquoise. Well-kept paths and viewing platforms, mostly flat, lead from the visitor centre to the falls in about 10 minutes, with Osorno Volcano framed behind on clear days. The falls are in Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, Chile's oldest. Buy your ticket online at pasesparques.cl before you go: there's little mobile signal at the entrance. Combine it with a look at Lake Todos los Santos at Petrohué, 6 km further on.
Getting there from the port
Taxi or private driver via Puerto Varas and Ensenada, about 90 minutes. By bus: minibus to Puerto Varas, then the Petrohué minibus (about an hour).
