Puerto Montt sits at the top of the Reloncaví Sound, where Chile's Lake District meets the fjords of the south. Large cruise ships anchor in the bay and bring passengers ashore by tender to the Empresa Portuaria Puerto Montt (Empormontt) pier on Avenida Angelmó; smaller ships can berth alongside. In April 2025 the port opened the Terminal Internacional de Pasajeros de Cruceros, a converted gymnasium with a covered walkway from the landing, border-control and customs desks, a café with a viewing terrace and shops selling regional crafts. From the gate the Feria Artesanal de Angelmó is a 5-minute walk west and the Angelmó fish market, with its upstairs cocinerías serving curanto and seafood stews, about 12 minutes. Little boats cross from Angelmó to Isla Tenglo, whose hilltop cross looks back over the city. Walk east along the Costanera instead and you reach the Museo Histórico Juan Pablo II (free, 10 minutes), the Sentados Frente al Mar sculpture and, after about 25 minutes, the Plaza de Armas with its wooden cathedral. Puerto Montt itself is a working city rather than a pretty one, so most visitors head inland. Minibuses leave the bus terminal on Avenida Diego Portales, 8 minutes' walk from the port, every few minutes for Puerto Varas (30–40 minutes) on Lake Llanquihue, with German-era houses, a lakeside promenade and views of Osorno Volcano. Frutillar, with the Teatro del Lago and the German colonial museum, is 50 minutes away. Petrohué Falls in Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park is 80 km and about 90 minutes each way, so book park tickets online and go by taxi, private driver or the ship's tour. Chiloé Island (Ancud, the Puñihuil penguin colony) is a 2-hour trip with a ferry crossing: only do it on the ship's tour. Weather changes fast, and tenders can be delayed by wind. Chile uses the peso (CLP); cards work in shops and restaurants, but carry cash for buses, boats, markets and park kiosks.

From the cruise terminal to the city centre
The Feria Artesanal is 5 minutes away and the Angelmó market about 12; the Plaza de Armas is a flat 25-minute walk east along the waterfront.
📍 Leave the terminal onto Avenida Angelmó: turn right (west) for the craft fair and fish market, left (east) along the Costanera for the museum and the centre.
Cash only; agree the price before you get in. For Puerto Varas, Frutillar or Petrohué Falls, hire a taxi by the hour or for the day and fix a pickup time.

Frequent minibuses run to Puerto Varas (30–40 minutes) and Frutillar (about an hour). Pay the driver in cash and check the time of the last useful bus back.
📍 Minibuses leave from the Terminal de Buses on Avenida Diego Portales, 8 minutes' walk east of the cruise terminal; the destination is on the windscreen.
Uber operates in Puerto Montt with card payment in the app. Handy for Pelluco or a one-way trip to Puerto Varas; waits can be long when several ships are in.

Cheap for hops between Angelmó, the centre and Pelluco, but routes and signs are in Spanish only. Pay the driver in cash.
