Built by the Spanish in the 1500s to guard the harbour against pirates, Fortaleza San Felipe is the oldest colonial building in Puerto Plata and one of the few survivors of its era on the north coast. Later it served as a prison, and Juan Pablo Duarte, founding father of the Dominican Republic, was briefly held here. Today the thick walls, moat and cannons are the draw, along with a small museum of weapons and finds. Climb onto the ramparts for views of the harbour, Mount Isabel de Torres and the Malecón. Allow under an hour; combine it with the lighthouse next door and a walk back along the seafront.
