Matsue Castle is one of only twelve original Japanese castle keeps to survive intact, a severe black-timber tower finished in 1611 and now a National Treasure. Unlike the many concrete reconstructions, you climb the original steep wooden stairs to the top floor for a 360-degree view over Matsue and Lake Shinji, and the surrounding moat and samurai quarter make an atmospheric walk.
Getting there from the port
About 45 minutes by taxi/car, or Sakai Line to Yonago then JR to Matsue
