Valparaíso's ascensores, steep funiculars built from the 1880s, are still the easiest way up the hills. The Reina Victoria runs from Calle Elías, by Plaza Aníbal Pinto, up to Paseo Dimalow on Cerro Concepción; visitors pay $1,000 CLP a ride. From the top, wander the lanes of Cerro Concepción and Cerro Alegre, the heart of the UNESCO-listed historic quarter, with murals, restored mansions, viewpoints such as Paseo Gervasoni and Paseo Atkinson, and plenty of cafés. Wear good shoes: the streets are steep and cobbled.
