Port summary
Sokcho is an easy port to do on your own. Ships berth at the Sokcho International Cruise Terminal, on the spit of land between Cheongchoho Lake and the sea. Walk south along the harbour road and you reach Abai Village in about 7 minutes. From there the gaetbae, a flat barge that passengers pull across the channel on a steel cable, takes you to the Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market side in a couple of minutes. On most call days a free shuttle also runs from the terminal to the market. The big draw is Seoraksan National Park, about 16 km inland. A taxi takes about 30 minutes and costs roughly ₩20,000–25,000. City buses 7 and 7-1 run from town to the Sogongwon entrance for ₩1,530 by card. At the park you can ride the cable car to Gwongeumseong, see the giant bronze Buddha at Sinheungsa Temple, or walk to Biryong Falls. Cable car tickets are sold only on the day and each ticket has a boarding time, so go early in October, when the autumn colours bring big crowds. Other good options are the seaside Naksansa Temple, 20 minutes south by taxi, Sokcho Beach and the Sokcho Eye Ferris wheel, and the Yeonggeumjeong pavilion and lighthouse on the rocks north of the harbour. Traffic on the single road out of Seoraksan can be slow on autumn weekends, so leave the park at least 90 minutes before all-aboard.
