Sorrento has no cruise berth: ships anchor in the bay and tender passengers to Marina Piccola, the ferry harbour at the foot of the cliffs. The town sits about 50 m above you. You can walk up the road and steps to Piazza Tasso in 15–20 minutes, ride the public lift (€1.20) to the Villa Comunale park, or take the little red EAV bus. Sorrento itself is an easy half day: Piazza Tasso, the Vallone dei Mulini gorge, the lanes around Via San Cesareo, the cloister of San Francesco and a seafood lunch down at Marina Grande. The big advantage of Sorrento is that Capri ferries leave from the very quay where your tender lands, taking 20–30 minutes. Pompeii is 30–35 minutes away on the Circumvesuviana train from Sorrento station, 5 minutes' walk from Piazza Tasso, and Herculaneum is further up the same line. Positano and Amalfi are reached by SITA bus or seasonal ferry, but the coast road is slow and often jammed in summer. Whatever you choose, check the last tender time and remember that sea conditions can stop both tenders and ferries.
