Pompeii was a busy Roman town of around 11,000 people when Vesuvius buried it under ash in AD 79. Today you can walk its paved streets, peer into bakeries and bars, and see frescoed villas, theatres, baths and the forum with Vesuvius behind it. The site is huge and shadeless, so pick a route: the forum, the Stabian Baths, the brothel, the House of the Faun and the amphitheatre fit into three hours. Tickets are named and entries are capped, so buy online, and bring water, a hat and good shoes.
