The Grand Socco — officially Place du 9 Avril 1947, after the speech King Mohammed V gave here demanding independence — is the gateway between the medina and the Ville Nouvelle. Cafés ring the perimeter, the Cinéma Rif (1938 Art Deco) anchors one corner, and the leafy Mendoubia Gardens stretch behind with the old Belgian consulate.
