Ainokura is the largest of the Gokayama hamlets, about twenty steep-thatched gassho-zukuri farmhouses on a mountain shelf, inscribed by UNESCO with Shirakawa-go in 1995. Far quieter than its famous neighbour, it lets you wander lanes between working farmhouses, some open as folk museums, with the roofs rethatched by whole-community effort every few decades.
