Kenrokuen, laid out by the Maeda lords over two centuries, is ranked among the three great gardens of Japan - a composed landscape of ponds, streams, stone lanterns and teahouses beside Kanazawa Castle. It is at its best under snow, when gardeners rig the pines with the rope cones (yukitsuri) that have become the garden's signature image.
