Opening time (09:00) before the heat and the coaches
Segesta was a city of the Elymians, a people who lived in western Sicily before the Greeks arrived. Its Doric temple, built in the late 5th century BC, stands almost complete on a hill above a valley: 36 columns with the full entablature and pediments, but no roof or inner chamber, as if it was never finished. From the temple a road climbs to Monte Barbaro, where the Greek theatre looks north over the hills towards the Gulf of Castellammare. You can walk up in about 30 minutes or take the park shuttle bus. Segesta is about 40 minutes from Trapani by road and buses are infrequent, so a taxi or private driver with waiting time is the practical choice. Entry is €14 (2026); go at opening time to avoid heat and coach groups, and bring water and a hat, as there is little shade.
