Port summary

New Orleans' cruise terminals sit side by side on the Mississippi at the upriver edge of downtown, next to the Convention Center and the Riverwalk outlet mall. Julia Street Cruise Terminal is the closer of the two to the city; Erato Street Cruise Terminal is about 500 m further upriver, beside Mardi Gras World. From either one you can walk into the city: the Warehouse District and the National WWII Museum are 10–20 minutes away, Canal Street about 20 minutes, and Jackson Square in the heart of the French Quarter 30–40 minutes along the riverfront. The Riverfront streetcar (route 49, $1.25) runs from Julia Street along the river to the French Quarter and French Market, and the St. Charles streetcar from Canal Street is the classic way to reach the Garden District's mansions. Taxis and rideshares are plentiful, though queues build at the terminals on turnaround mornings, so it's often quicker to walk a block to Convention Center Boulevard. Most calls here are embarkation or disembarkation days, so many passengers stay a night or two before or after the cruise: if you do, add a swamp tour, a jazz club on Frenchmen Street or a plantation on the River Road. Summers are hot, humid and stormy, and June–November is hurricane season. The French Quarter is safe and busy by day; at night stick to lit, busy streets and watch your belongings.
