The St. Charles streetcar has run since 1835, making it the oldest continuously operating street railway in the world. Its olive-green cars rumble up oak-lined St. Charles Avenue from Canal Street to the Garden District and Uptown. Get off at Washington Avenue and walk the blocks between St. Charles, Prytania and Magazine to see the mansions. Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 reopened for small guided tours in October 2026 after a seven-year restoration; book in advance through the Preservation Resource Center.
Getting there from the port
Walk 20 minutes to Canal Street at Carondelet and take the St. Charles streetcar to Washington Avenue (about 20–25 minutes).
