Port summary
Progreso's cruise berths sit at the far end of the Muelle Fiscal, a pier that runs about 6.5 km out into the shallow Gulf of Mexico. Walking it isn't allowed, so a free shuttle bus runs from the ship to the landward end of the pier every 10–20 minutes; the last shuttle back leaves about an hour before all-aboard. You arrive by the crafts market, taxis and tour desks, a short walk from the Malecón and its free, wide beach. Progreso itself is a relaxed seaside town: beach clubs, seafood restaurants, the 1893 lighthouse, a market and the modern Meteorite Museum about the Chicxulub impact. Most passengers head inland. Mérida, the colonial capital of Yucatán, is 35 km south: AutoProgreso buses run every 15 minutes or so to a terminal near the main square (about 45 minutes, MXN 28), or a taxi or Uber takes 30–40 minutes. The Maya city of Dzibilchaltún, with its museum and cenote, is only 20 minutes away and easy to combine with the beach. Uxmal (almost 2 hours each way) and Chichén Itzá (about 2 hours each way) are long days best done on a tour that guarantees your return. Yucatán is one of Mexico's safest states, but the heat is the real hazard: bring water, a hat and sunscreen, especially at the shadeless ruins.
