Uxmal flourished between about AD 700 and 1000 and is the finest example of the Puuc architectural style. The Pyramid of the Magician, unusually oval in plan, greets you at the entrance; behind it lie the Nunnery Quadrangle and the Governor's Palace, whose façades are covered in intricate stone mosaics and masks of the rain god Chaac. You can climb the Great Pyramid for views over the jungle. Allow at least two hours on site, wear good shoes and take plenty of water: shade is scarce.
