Punta Gorda is the oldest permanent settlement on Roatan, founded in 1797 by Garifuna people who were exiled here by the British. It is a national monument and still the heart of Garifuna life on the island. This is a working seaside village rather than an attraction: expect brightly painted houses, fishing boats, and — if you are lucky — a punta drumming and dance performance. Pick up cassava bread or coconut candy from local sellers and pair it with a stop in Oak Ridge on the same drive.
