Port summary

Salaverry is a small fishing town with a multipurpose cargo port about 15 km south of Trujillo. Ships tie up at the commercial piers run by Salaverry Terminal Internacional. You can't walk through the cargo area, so you leave by coach, ship's shuttle or taxi from the gate. The Trujillo area is one of the richest archaeological regions in South America. Huaca de la Luna, the painted Moche temple, is only about 20 minutes from the port. Chan Chan, the largest adobe city in the Americas and a UNESCO site, lies between Trujillo and the sea, and Huanchaco, with its caballitos de totora reed boats and ceviche restaurants, is just beyond it. Trujillo's colonial centre has a bright Plaza de Armas, a 17th-century cathedral and painted mansions. With a hired driver you can combine Huaca de la Luna, Trujillo and Chan Chan in 5 to 6 hours. The coast is dry all year, but the sun is strong at the open sites. Keep valuables out of sight, use app or official taxis, and carry soles in cash.
