🕐 Best time to visit
Opening time (9:00) before the heat; allow 90 minutes
Nik An is the only one of Chan Chan's ten walled palaces open to visitors. A marked circuit leads through a huge ceremonial plaza, corridors decorated with friezes of fish, pelicans and waves, audience rooms and a sunken reservoir that once held water for the court. A newer route links the site museum, Huaca Toledo and Nik An. One ticket covers Nik An, the site museum, Huaca Esmeralda and Huaca del Dragón. Local guides wait at the entrance. There is almost no shade, so bring a hat, sunscreen and water.
Getting there from the port
Taxi or Uber from the port gate (about 40 minutes); best with a hired driver who waits.
