Any time; Sunday morning for the flag-raising ceremony
The Plaza de Armas is one of Peru's most photogenic squares. Yellow, blue and ochre colonial buildings with ornate window grilles surround a garden with the marble Freedom Monument, sculpted by Edmund Moeller. The cathedral and the archbishop's palace stand on one side. On Sunday mornings there's a flag-raising ceremony, sometimes with marinera dancers and Peruvian Paso horses.
Getting there from the port
Ship's shuttle to the Plaza de Armas where offered, or a taxi or Uber from the port gate (30–40 minutes).
