Beppu has been one of Japan's leading bamboo craft centres for centuries, and this museum celebrates that heritage with a beautifully curated collection spanning traditional utilitarian baskets and tea ceremony utensils through to striking contemporary art pieces. The museum is compact and can be visited in about 30 minutes. Admission is free, making it an easy stop to add to a city-centre stroll. A small gift shop sells authentic bamboo souvenirs — from simple chopstick rests to intricate woven baskets — at reasonable prices. The centre occasionally hosts demonstration workshops where visitors can try basic bamboo weaving techniques.
