Late afternoon for golden light over the bay

Beppu Tower is a charming piece of post-war Japanese modernism, built in 1957 and designed by Taro Naito — the architect behind seven other similar towers across Japan, including Nagoya's TV Tower and the Tsutenkaku in Osaka. The observation deck sits at 55 metres and offers a modest but rewarding 360-degree panorama over the steaming rooftops of Beppu, the bay and the mountains beyond. It is especially atmospheric in the late afternoon when golden light washes over the water. The tower is centrally located, just a 5-minute walk from JR Beppu Station, making it an easy start or end to a day ashore.

Getting there from the port

Take the free port shuttle to JR Beppu Station, then walk 5 minutes east toward the waterfront.
