The Jigoku Meguri is Beppu's most iconic experience — a tour of seven spectacular boiling hot spring pools, each with a distinctive character. Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell) dazzles with its cobalt-blue water; Chinoike Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell) is a vivid red; Oniishibozu Jigoku features bubbling grey mud that resembles a monk's shaven head; and Tatsumaki Jigoku is a geyser that erupts roughly every 30 minutes. Five of the seven hells cluster together in Kannawa, while the remaining two (Chinoike and Tatsumaki) are in nearby Shibaseki, a 15-minute walk or short bus ride away. The combined 7-hell pass is excellent value compared to buying individual tickets.
Getting there from the port
Bus 5 or 7 from JR Beppu Station to Kannawa (15 min, ¥340). Or take a taxi (¥1,500–¥2,000).
