Culross Palace was built between 1597 and 1611 for the merchant Sir George Bruce, who made his fortune from coal and salt. Its painted wooden ceilings and period rooms are among the best of their kind in Scotland, and the garden behind it grows the herbs, vegetables and fruit of the time. It was used as a location in Outlander. The National Trust for Scotland admits small groups every 15 minutes. Buy tickets at the Town House shop on the day, and wander the cobbled lanes up to the abbey while you wait.
Getting there from the port
About 25 minutes by taxi from the terminal. Book a return pick-up, as taxis are scarce in Culross.
