🕐 Best time to visit

First slot at 9:30 or after 15:00 to avoid the coach groups; be there for the One O'Clock Gun.

Edinburgh Castle crowns an extinct volcano at the top of the Royal Mile. Inside the walls you'll find St Margaret's Chapel (the city's oldest building), the Great Hall, the Honours of Scotland with the Stone of Destiny, the National War Museum and the One O'Clock Gun, which is fired daily except Sundays. Tickets are cheaper online and sell out on summer cruise days, so book a timed slot before you leave the ship. Allow at least 90 minutes, plus the 15-minute uphill walk from Waverley station.

Getting there from the port

Taxi or shuttle to Inverkeithing, train to Edinburgh Waverley, then walk 15 minutes uphill via the Royal Mile.

Best transport: train Cost: £10–12 taxi to the station; train about £7.40 return
