Horikawa Canal

The Horikawa Canal was dug in 1686 on the orders of the Obi domain lord to transport timber from the forested hills around the castle town down to the port at Aburatsu. Today the 3.5 km canal is a peaceful walking route through the centre of Nichinan, its stone-walled banks lined with cherry trees that create a tunnel of blossoms in spring. Carp swim in the clear water, and traditional stone bridges cross at intervals. The canal area is flat and easy to walk, making it accessible for most visitors. A few small cafes and shops sit alongside the waterway. It is a pleasant spot to stroll for 20–30 minutes, especially as a warm-up before or wind-down after visiting the bigger sights along the Nichinan Coast.
