Kitahama & Ekimae-dori Shopping Streets

The Kitahama and Ekimae-dori shopping arcades are traditional covered shopping streets radiating from JR Beppu Station, offering a relaxed browse through local life in Beppu. The arcades are lined with small shops selling yunohana bath salts (crystallised mineral deposits from the hot springs), kabosu citrus products unique to Oita prefecture, bamboo crafts and other regional souvenirs. The Tokiwa Department Store at the south end of the arcade participates in tax-free schemes for purchases over ¥5,000. A handful of casual restaurants and cafés make it a pleasant place to grab lunch or a coffee between sightseeing stops. The arcades are an easy walk from both JR Beppu Station and Beppu Tower.
