Glover Garden is an open-air museum of restored Western-style mansions from Nagasaki's Meiji-era trading days, perched on a hillside overlooking the harbour. The star attraction is the Glover Residence, Japan's oldest surviving Western-style building from 1863, linked to the Madame Butterfly opera. Visitors ride a travelator to the top entrance and stroll downhill past nine historic houses, flower gardens, and sweeping harbour views. The site includes a café with harbour panoramas and a gift shop. Allow 60–90 minutes.

Getting there from the port

5 min walk south from Matsugae terminal. Use the travelator/escalator to the upper entrance and walk downhill through the garden.
