Nagasaki Shinchi Chinatown is one of Japan's three great Chinatowns and the oldest, dating back to Chinese merchants who traded here in the 17th century. The compact quarter is framed by four ornate gates and packed with restaurants serving Nagasaki's signature champon noodles, sara udon, and Chinese-Japanese fusion dishes. The main street is just 250 metres long but the atmosphere is vibrant, with lanterns, incense from nearby temples, and dessert stalls selling sesame balls and moon cakes. Best visited around lunchtime when the restaurants are in full swing.
Getting there from the port
12 min walk north from Matsugae terminal, past Dejima. Or tram to Tsuki-machi stop.
