Port summary
Robinson Crusoe Island is the main island of the remote Juan FernĂĄndez archipelago, about 670 km west of ValparaĂso. Ships anchor in Cumberland Bay and tender passengers to the small pier of San Juan Bautista, the only village, home to under a thousand people. The landing depends on swell and wind, so calls are sometimes cancelled. The village is small and walkable: the plaza, the Spanish fort of Santa BĂĄrbara and the Cuevas de los Patriotas, where Chilean independence fighters were held in 1814, are all within a few minutes of the landing. The headline is the steep trail up to the Mirador de Selkirk, where the Scottish sailor who inspired Robinson Crusoe watched for ships; allow 3â4 hours return and pay the national park fee at the CONAF office. Gentler trails lead to the Salsipuedes viewpoint and the forest picnic area of Plazoleta El Yunque. In the bay lies the wreck of the German cruiser SMS Dresden, scuttled in 1915, and Juan FernĂĄndez fur seals are often seen along the coast. Lobster is the local speciality. Bring cash in Chilean pesos, sturdy shoes and a rain jacket.
