Just above the village, the Cuevas de los Patriotas are a row of caves in the hillside where the Spanish held 42 Chilean patriots after the Battle of Rancagua in 1814. A short climb further up is the Fuerte Santa Bárbara, an 18th-century Spanish fort, restored in the 1970s, with a line of cannons aimed over Cumberland Bay. Both are free and give the best view of the anchored ship. The path is steep and can be muddy after rain.
Getting there from the port
Walk from the tender pier (2–10 minutes).
