🕐 Best time to visit

Morning for soft light and fewer visitors. Cherry blossom (late March-early April) is stunning.

Sankeien is a 175,000-square-metre garden built by silk merchant Hara Sankei in 1906. The grounds hold 17 historic structures relocated from Kyoto, Kamakura and elsewhere, including a three-storey pagoda from 1457 and a farmhouse with a thatched roof. Paths wind past ponds, streams and seasonal flowers: plum blossoms in February, cherry blossoms in April, irises in June and autumn foliage in November. The inner garden preserves the founder's private retreat. Allow 60-90 minutes for a full circuit.
